History
The area now known as Bethpage was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Secatogue and Massapequa. In 1695, a group of Quakers from Jericho purchased land in the area and established a community. They named this settlement Bethphage, which means "house of figs" in Hebrew. This name was later modified to Bethpage.
In the late 1800s, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) built a station in Bethpage, leading to an influx of population and industrial development. The railroad also connected Bethpage to New York City, making it a popular summer destination for city dwellers. The opening of the LIRR station also led to the development of new businesses and industries in Bethpage, including a large brick factory and a wallpaper manufacturing company.
Bethpage is also known for its significant contribution to aviation history. In 1929, Leroy Grumman and Jake Swirbul founded the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation in Bethpage, which became one of the leading aircraft manufacturers during World War II. The company later merged with Northrop Corporation and continued producing airplanes until 1994. Today, many of the former Grumman buildings are still standing and used for various purposes.
In recent years, Bethpage has undergone significant developments, including the construction of new residential neighborhoods and commercial buildings. Despite these changes, the town's rich history is still preserved through historical landmarks such as the Quaker Meeting House and the Bethpage Village Restoration.
